From Pune to Pan-India: Rio Innobev Raises ₹10 Cr to Scale Homegrown Beverage Brand
Pune-based Rio Innobev has raised ₹10 crore in its pre-Series A funding round, marking its first major institutional investment. The round was led by Atomic Capital, with several other high-profile investors participating discreetly for now.
Founded in 2014 by Rahul Sangoi, the homegrown beverage brand has been steadily building momentum over the years. This latest funding marks more than just a financial milestone—it reflects Rio’s growing presence in India’s competitive FMCG space.
With a portfolio that now includes over 15 million units sold annually and shelf space in 35,000+ retail outlets across Maharashtra and Gujarat, the company is gearing up for its next big leap. Over the next three years, Rio aims to expand its retail footprint to 100,000 stores nationwide.
Beyond traditional retail, the company is doubling down on quick commerce platforms, supermarket chains, and other modern trade channels to target Gen Z and millennial shoppers, who are increasingly turning to digital-first and convenience-based purchasing habits.
Rio’s standout products—RIO Bubbly Fruit Drink (BFD) and RIO BOOM Energy Drink—have been crafted specifically for younger, lifestyle-conscious consumers. BFD contains real fruit juice (15%), vitamin C, and honey, with 25% less sugar than typical competitors. Meanwhile, RIO BOOM delivers an accessible energy boost, appealing to a high-energy demographic with a budget-friendly price point.
“We didn’t just want to launch another drink,” says co-founder Rahul Sangoi. “We wanted to create something that actually resonates with India’s young, bold, and aspirational consumers. This fundraise validates the journey we’ve been on—and gives us the fuel to push faster, further, and harder.”
Remarkably, Rio claims to have been EBITDA positive since inception—a notable achievement in India’s fast-moving consumer goods landscape. From a modest beginning with just 7.5 lakh units sold in its first year, the company now runs a fully integrated production facility in Pune, producing tens of millions of beverages annually.
