JioPC Launches: Virtual Desktop Service Brings PC Experience to Your TV

Reliance Jio Platforms, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, has launched JioPC, a new cloud-based desktop service designed to turn any television into a personal computer using the company’s Jio set-top box. Available initially as a free trial for users who join a waitlist, JioPC is part of Jio’s broader ambition to make digital tools more accessible to millions of Indians, particularly in areas where computers remain out of reach for many. Users can either purchase the Jio set-top box for ₹5,499 (about $64) or receive it as part of a Jio Fiber broadband subscription. Once connected to a keyboard and mouse, the set-top box enables users to access a full virtual desktop interface on their TV screen.

JioPC is cloud-based, so there is no local software to install or update. The operating system has productivity applications such as LibreOffice, which supports basic functions of document editing, spreadsheets, and presentations. Although Microsoft Office programs are not available in the system itself, one can access them using a web browser. Currently, the platform does not have support for peripherals like webcams or printers, although Jio has suggested that these features will be included in the future. Notably, JioPC will need an active internet connection and won’t work offline.

The release is a strategic one to counter India’s widening digital divide. Studies have shown that more than 70% of Indian homes have a television, but just 15% of them have a computer. By converting TVs—already ubiquitous in homes—into PCs, JioPC provides a low-cost means of computing for millions without the up-front expenses or maintenance of regular PCs. JioPC is especially suitable for education, simple productivity, web surfing, and virtual learning, which makes it a good fit for students, small businesses, and homes in remote areas.

The interface resembles that of a traditional desktop, with multi-window functionality, storage options, and the ability to manage files like any personal computer. Jio has built the system on a Linux-based operating system, likely a version of Ubuntu with the Cinnamon desktop environment. Early users report that the virtual machine offers decent performance, with specifications such as 8 GB RAM, four virtual CPUs, and 128 GB of cloud storage—more than sufficient for most day-to-day tasks. While heavy-duty software or media editing may not be practical, the system is more than capable of handling routine educational and office-related work.

The initiative also reflects Jio’s ongoing commitment to cloud infrastructure and digital transformation. Just four months before the launch, Jio chairman Akash Ambani emphasized the company’s vision of a cloud PC capable of running advanced AI workloads and being accessible across multiple device types. This indicates a long-term strategy to evolve JioPC into a more powerful platform, possibly integrating artificial intelligence features in the future.

Industry experts have lauded the innovation but caution that success depends on user awareness and trust. “The idea of using the television set as a computer via the set-top box is innovative,” said Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint. “But JioPC will require strong consumer education to scale adoption. People need to be convinced that a virtual desktop accessed on a TV can replace a traditional PC.” With Jio’s vast telecom and broadband infrastructure, the potential for wide-scale adoption is significant—particularly if the company manages to build strong user confidence, add hardware support, and ensure reliable internet connectivity. JioPC could become a foundational tool in India’s journey toward digital inclusion, providing affordable access to computing for millions.

Looking ahead, JioPC could play a transformative role not only in homes but also in schools, rural learning centers, small businesses, and government offices. By minimizing hardware costs and centralizing computing in the cloud, Jio is reducing both the economic and technical barriers that have long kept large segments of the population offline. As India continues its push toward becoming a digitally empowered society, initiatives like JioPC show how infrastructure, cloud technology, and local innovation can come together to redefine access and opportunity.
