India’s digital content consumption has changed massively over the past decade. OTT (Over-The-Top) platforms have now become one of the most important sources of entertainment in India, covering both video streaming and audio content.

This shift has happened mainly because of three big reasons: affordable internet, widespread smartphone usage, and a strong demand for on-demand entertainment. Earlier, people depended on TV and cinema, but now users prefer watching content anytime and anywhere on their mobile devices.

Today, OTT platforms are not limited to metro cities. They have become a nationwide habit. From small towns to big cities, people are actively consuming digital content in multiple languages.

At present, around 707 million internet users in India are engaged with OTT services. This number shows how fast digital entertainment is growing in the country. The subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) segment is also expanding rapidly and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.1%, reaching around 2.77 billion dollars by 2027.

This growth clearly shows that OTT is not just a trend anymore, but a major part of India’s digital economy.

This major shift has created a strong startup ecosystem in India. Many new companies are now building platforms in areas like video streaming, audio storytelling, short-form content, and regional entertainment.

Currently, India has more than 160 OTT startups, founded by nearly 200 entrepreneurs. These startups are trying to solve one main problem: delivering content that is affordable, local, and available in multiple languages.

Some of the well-known Indian OTT and audio platforms include Pocket FM, Kuku FM, Gaana, MX Player, Hungama, Zee5, and TVF Play. Each of these platforms is targeting different types of audiences.

Pocket FM and Kuku FM focus mainly on audio storytelling and podcasts
MX Player and Hungama focus on video streaming and hybrid content
Zee5 and TVF Play focus heavily on regional and original content

These platforms are competing not only with each other but also with global giants by focusing on Indian audiences and regional preferences.

Another important factor behind this growth is changing user behavior. Indian audiences now prefer regional language content more than ever before. This has encouraged startups to create content in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, and many other languages.

Along with this, affordable subscription models and free ad-supported content are helping platforms reach a larger audience.

Funding in this sector has also increased significantly over the years. OTT startups in India have collectively raised more than 2 billion dollars in funding. This investment is being used for improving technology, producing new content, expanding user base, and building better recommendation systems.

Even though global platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are still very strong in India, local startups are growing by focusing on areas where global players are weaker, such as regional content, low-cost subscriptions, and local storytelling.

This is helping Indian OTT startups build a strong identity in the global entertainment market.

In the coming years, this industry is expected to grow even faster. New trends like AI-based content recommendations, micro-drama short videos, creator-driven platforms, and hyper-local content will play a big role.

We may also see more integration between social media, gaming, and OTT platforms, creating a full digital entertainment ecosystem.

Overall, India’s OTT startup ecosystem is still in a strong growth phase and will continue to expand in the coming years as internet usage and digital content demand increase across the country.
